According to records, Alexander Shuttleworth was killed on 18th March, 1916 while serving with the 13th Essex battalion of 6 Brigade, 2nd Division. However the battalion diary for that date recorded that 13th Essex left their billets in Coupigny and marched to other billets in Bruay and there is no mention of any casualties. The entries in this diary are very limited in detail and indeed some dates do not have an entry at all, so it could be that they were the victims of shell fire or equally they may have been temporarily attached to another unit at this time. |
